About 10 years later, they sold the entire town to a wealthy industrialist, who again sought to establish it as a center for enlightenment. But the German settlers didn’t stay long. They quickly became a self-sufficient spiritual society. In 1814, a group of German immigrants seeking religious freedom founded New Harmony.
